Index notes for Proprietors Records

February, 2018
- The Proprietor Records are in two large volumes. Each volume starts with Page 1, so two separate indexes are provided. The files are large, requiring each volume of the proprietor records to be posted in a number of smaller files. Each file is designated as part of A or B as well as the volumes corresponding index.
-The Proprietors records cover land surveys from 1710 - 1837
- The indexes contain all the names and dates of the land records surveyed, The "H" column is "Homestead". In the early days, most every land holder had many pieces of land. The homestead column identifies where they lived, as opposed to other land they had for investment or business. The balance of the descriptors from descriptor column 1 and 2 are secondary, and mostly geographical in nature to help identify some characteristic regarding the location and/or type of land.
The "Descriptor" columns are not all inclusive. They are only chosen based on availability of detail in that specific record, and do not reflect all records. For example; "Flat" represents river flats, but, if a record identified which river, the river name was chosen, not the word Flat.
- The "Homestead" descriptors are only identified on the records when it was clearly stated in the record.
- Duplicate records in the index represent multiple pieces of land surveyed on a particular page.
- Multiple records of names may also point to a single piece of land since some land is jointly owned.
- Spelling - Names and place names are spelled differently from record to record and different from today's spelling. The spelling in the indexes, whether correct on not, are spelled only one way for consistency.
- If you encounter a mistake in interpretation of a name, or can identify words indicated with the ?, or, any other error for that matter, please use the form link next to the indexes to let me know so I can correct the underlying data.
This completes the baseline index. As corrections and additions are added to the index, index revisions will be posted. They will be identified by a revision date. Each revision will have the changes and additions from the previous version in red.
